Islamic Geometric Patterns (Book & CD Rom) by Eric Broug, published by Thames & Hudson

Islamic geometric design Workshops

Learning how to design an Islamic geometrical design with a ruler and a compass is a real voyage of discovery. It shows that complex designs are not so complex afer all and that traditonal Islamic craftsmen used practical methods to create their timeless designs.

Anyone can create an Islamic geometric design. No prior knowledge or skill is required, age is not a factor. In the workshops I have given over the years, ages have ranged from 12 to 75.  Historical sources showed that the Islamic craftsmen-designers were not mathematicians, so why should an aspiring student of geometric design be one?

In my workshop I teach how to create one or two designs in an afternoon or evening session. The workshop starts with a short visual presentation on Islamic geometric design.  After this,  the basic principles of designing with a compass and ruler is  demonstrated and participants will be able to create a design and tesselate their design in a 2x2 grid so that it forms a composition that reveals its design secrets. For more information, see the 'learn' section of this website.
